Laurent Brossoit Re-Ups for 2020-21 in Winnipeg

On Friday, the Winnipeg Jets and goaltender Laurent Brossoit agreed to terms on a one-year, $1.5 million contract for the 2020-21 NHL season. The annual average value on this year’s contract is a slight raise from the $1.225 that Brossoit earned in 2019-20.

The 27-year-old former sixth round draft pick of the Calgary Flames has served as Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck‘s backup for the past two seasons. Brossoit’s signing was actually broken by his agent Ray Petkau of Alpha Hockey Inc. on Twitter Friday afternoon. The deal was later confirmed by both the Jets and the League office.

The success of the 6-foot-3, 205-pound goaltender’s 2018-19 season led to a significant raise for 2019-20, where the backup failed to improve upon his numbers in his second year with Winnipeg. 2018-19 saw Brossoit go 13-6-2 with 2.52 goals against average and a spectacular .925 save percentage. He recorded a 3.28 goals against average, a .895 save percentage and a 6-7-1 record behind Hellebuyck last season.

Working behind the league’s best backstop gave Brossoit just 15 starts in the COVID-19 shortened 2019-20 season, as compared to his 19 starts the year prior. The former Edmonton Oil King relieved his starter an additional four times last year, as compared to his two relief appearances in 2018-19. Brossoit last saw action on February 25, where he lost 4-3 to the Washington Capitals in a shootout.

Brossoit’s signing takes care of the Jets’ goaltending position for the coming season, as both he and partner Hellebuyck are now locked in. Asking for yet another one-year, ‘prove it’ style deal, the Port Alberni, BC. product will look to rebound from his mediocre 2019-20 campaign and earn himself yet another raise next offseason. Eric Comrie and Mikhail Berdin will man the cage for the Manitoba Moose in 2020-21.
