The Pittsburgh Penguins have released their training camp roster that includes 23 forwards, 13 defensemen, and four goalies. Training camp officially opens in Pittsburgh on January 3rd at PPG Paints Arena. The 40-man roster is headlined by Captain Sidney Crosby, alongside veteran superstars Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang, and 40-goal scorer Jake Guentzel. Among the four goalies included is starting goaltender Tristan Jarry, who is coming off a career year in which he was named an NHL All-Star.
Some new faces will feature in a Penguins uniform for the first time including forward Kasperi Kapanen. The former Pens first-round draft pick (22nd overall) returned to Pittsburgh this offseason via trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Forward Colton Sceviour and defenseman Mike Matheson were both acquired from the Florida Panthers via trade this past offseason as well. Defenseman Cody Ceci, a former first-round pick (15th overall) of the Ottawa Senators, signed with the team as a free agent, as well as forward Mark Jankowski, who ranks fifth in the league with seven shorthanded goals since 2017-18.

Ep 45: Canucks, Islanders, and The Boston Bruinsby Full Press Coverage on January 26, 2023 at 6:26 am
In this episode, Jim and Chris discuss the latest with the Canucks, […]
Players will have a better opportunity to make the team this upcoming season as the league rules and protocol have allowed teams the flexibility to carry extra players in a taxi-squad at all times. The Penguins will already have one open roster spot available for opening night as forward Zach Aston-Reese remains on the LTIR as he recovers from injury.
Aside from starting goaltender Tristan Jarry, the club has invited Casey DeSmith and Alex D’Orio, who both signed with the team in 2017, as well as Maxime Lagace, who inked a one-year deal with the Penguins this offseason. The NHL has made it mandatory that teams must carry three goalies at all times throughout the year which would likely see the trio of Jarry, DeSmith, and Lagace remaining with the team as they all have NHL experience.
Additionally, the Pens will have their top two picks from the 2019 NHL draft, forwards Sam Poulin and Nathan Legare attend training camp. Poulin, the first-round pick (21st overall) is coming off of a fantastic year for the Sherbrooke Phoenix of the QMJHL where he tallied 77 points in 46 games. Legare, a third-round pick (74th overall) also had 71 points in 61 games for the Baie-Comeau Drakkar of the QMJHL last season. Both players will be given a great opportunity to crack the opening night roster.
Also attending this years’ camp are college free agent signings forward Drew O’Connor, and defensemen Cameron Lee and Josh Maniscalco.
The camp roster also features forward Jordan Nolan as the only player invited on a PTO. Nolan is a two-time Stanley Cup Champion with the Los Angeles Kings in 2012 and 2014 and has recently signed an AHL contract with the Penguins affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
