It is finally that day. That’s right. The NHL Trade Deadline comes at 3:00 pm EDT. Crazy enough, there was a surge of trades last night and early this morning.
Oh, so you were sleeping? Here is a little bit of what happened last night.

Ep 45: Canucks, Islanders, and The Boston Bruinsby Full Press Coverage on January 26, 2023 at 6:26 am
In this episode, Jim and Chris discuss the latest with the Canucks, […]
Taylor Hall was traded to the Boston Bruins right around midnight EDT. The return was underwhelming to most but the trade went down like this.
The #NHLBruins acquired 29 y/o Taylor Hall ($8M, 50% retained then UFA) & 26 y/o Curtis Lazar (Yr 1/2 $800K) from #Sabres for 24 y/o Anders Bjork (Yr 1/3 $1.6M) & 2nd Round Pick per reports.#BOS adds $3.2M Annual Cap Hit; $772K for remainder of yearhttps://t.co/sAMzEDOZ3b

It was quite a coup for Boston considering they did not have to give up a first-round pick or top prospect for the top-six forward. That was far from the only deal of the night or significant one for that matter.
Ron Hextall was able to swing a deal with the Los Angeles Kings as he acquired Jeff Carter during the overnight on Sunday. The big thing was Los Angeles retaining half of Carter’s salary for next season.
The #LetsGoPens acquired 36 y/o F Jeff Carter (Yr 10/11 $5.27M, 50% retained) from #LAKings for cond. '22 3rd & cond. '23 4th.#PIT adds $2.64M in Annual Cap Hit

Carter bolsters the offense of the Pittsburgh Penguins at least until Evgeni Malkin returns. It will be interesting to see how Carter is utilized then. Will he be on the wing or at center or both? Either way, Hextall may not be done as he tries to add some depth and physicality on Monday.
Other moves included David Rittich heading to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Braydon Coburn traded to the New York Islanders, and Mike Reilly shipping up to Boston. Five of the eight trades happened in a period of fewer than 90 minutes. Could we see that type of flurry today? What else will happen? Stay tuned.
This is just the beginning as we keep you updated here all day at Full Press Hockey.
10:30 am — Some trade chatter indicating teams like Detroit and New Jersey, etc. are open for business. In the meantime, it probably is a good time to get some food.
11:00 am — Joonas Korpisalo will start on Monday night which means he is staying in Columbus.
11:40 am — For those wondering what is going on, it is just about lunchtime on the East Coast and honestly not much is happening other than some chatter about players like Josh Manson, Rickard Rakell, etc.
Noon — Hey it looks like Dmitry Kulikov may be going to the Edmonton Oilers for a draft pick according to Kevin Weekes.
12:05 pm — Dallas claims D Sami Vatanen off waivers and Ottawa claims D Victor Mete.
12:15 pm — Appears Chicago has acquired Adam Gaudette from Vancouver for Matthew Highmore.
12:18 pm — The pick from Edmonton looks to be a conditional fourth-round draft pick for Dmitry Kulikov (waiting on possible passport issue).
12:30 pm — Vegas looking into Ryan Getzlaf and maybe Nolan Patrick. Avalanche are trying to prime themselves for a big move.
12:50 pm — Sharks trade Frederik Claesson to Tampa Bay for goalie prospect Magnus Chrona — Pierre LeBrun breaks that one.
1:05 pm — Chicago Blackhawks trade Mattias Janmark (C) and a 2022 5th round pick to the Vegas Golden Knights for a 2021 2nd round pick and 2002 3rd-round pick.
1:30 pm — Hey, it’s awfully damn quiet. This is the time where it usually calms down before a frenzy of sorts. This may not be that year.
1:42 pm — Adding a little to the Janmark deal to Vegas is this from the San Jose side of things…the whole deal between Vegas, Chicago, and San Jose.
1:55 pm — Some extension news as the Los Angeles Kings sign Alex Iafallo to a 4-year deal worth $4 million AAV.
2:00 pm — The Final Hour is here NHL fans!!!! My suggestion….go get a drink. Relax a bit. It’s about to get a little crazier. Maybe…hopefully? Something? Anything?
2:12 pm — Carl Soderberg (center) will head back home to the Colorado Avalanche. Chicago gets back Ryder Rolston and Josh Dickinson.
2:18 pm — Bob McKenzie reports that Scott Laughton indeed gets a five-year extension at $3 million AAV to stay with Philadelphia.
2:45 pm — Sam Bennett goes to Florida for a second-round pick in 2022 and Emil Heinemen (2020 2nd round pick).
2:45 pm — Erik Gustafsson (Philadelphia) to the Montreal Canadiens (Details to come — looks like a 2022 7th round selection.)
3:00 pm — Pencils DOWN! (Not exactly as everyone knows)…there are always the extra moves that get in before the final bell.
3:05 pm — Ben Hutton gets traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a fifth-round pick.
3:05 pm — Erik Gudbranson moved by Ottawa to the Nashville Predators for a 2023 7th round selection and Brandon Fortunato.
3:15 pm — Toronto trades Alexander Barabanov to San Jose for Antti Suomela.
3:15 pm — Winnipeg has added Jordie Benn from the Vancouver Canucks for a 2021 sixth-round pick.
3:20 pm — Philadelphia trades Michael Raffl to the Washington Capitals for a fifth-round selection.
3:20 pm — Haydn Fleury from the Carolina Hurricanes gets traded to the Anaheim Ducks for a sixth-round pick and Jani Hakanpaa
3:25 pm — Chicago Blackhawks trade Madison Bowey to the Vancouver Canucks (for TBD).
3:30 pm — Detroit Red Wings send Anthony Mantha to the Washington Capitals for Jakub Vrana, Richard Panik, plus a 2021 first-round pick and 2022 second-round selection.
As of now that appears to be it, for the NHL Trade Deadline. Thanks for following us here today at Full Press Hockey and as always there will be more on the deals of the day coming later tonight and tomorrow.
