The New York Rangers enter their post-Thanksgiving matinee tilt with the Boston Bruins at 12-4-3 and just two points behind the Carolina Hurricanes for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division. The Blueshirts are being led by Chirs Kreider on offense who has an impressive 15 goals in 19 games. Three times as many as the next member of the team. That is in sharp contrast to the NY-Metro team that many expected to be leading the division… the New York Islanders.
The Islanders have stumbled to a 5-9-2 record to begin the season and find themselves firmly in last place in the Metro division. Eight points behind the Flyers who are tied with the Devils for seventh. They are in the midst of a seven-game losing streak, including a 4-1 loss to the Rangers just the other day. Now, the Islanders played just 16 games, fewer than every team in the division, but still sports one of the five worst goal differentials in the entire league.
Now, the Islanders’ current odds to make the playoffs have dropped to +112 while the Rangers (-240) are still expected to make the playoffs this season. It might be a good time to consider paying more attention to the odds. Hopefully, New York’s online sports betting sites will have finally launched by the time playoffs are near so local state fans can take advantage of the odds. A handful of sites have been approved for launching and many of them have already opened up for pre-registration.
With that said, the Rangers may be the better bet moving forward which would have seemed a bit of a stretch heading into the season. However, they aren’t without any concerns. As great as Kreider has been, they will need to get more consistent scoring from the rest of the team. Kevin Rooney is second on the team with five goals with Adam Fox, Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad, and Alexis Lafreniere all tied with four apiece. As a team, they are 16th in the league, scoring 2.84 goals per game.
The Islanders are even worse an even two per game. Good for 31st in the league. It doesn’t help that they have the league’s worst power play and have taken the fewest shots. Brock Nelson leads the team with nine goals and 11 assists. However, newcomer Zach Parise has yet to find the back of the net in 16 games so far and J.G. Pageau, Josh Bailey, and Kyle Palmieri have just one goal apiece. Not a great recipe for success.
The silver lining for the Islanders could also be the opposite for the Rangers and that is… there is nearly 75 percent of the season remaining. Plenty of time for the Islanders to write the ship and also enough time for the Rangers to level out.
