After long discussions and opinions going all the way you could imagine – The IIHF has confirmed that China will remain as part of the Winter Olympic Men’s hockey tournament.
China will have to ice their team in group A in February where they will meet with Canada, USA, and German national teams. The 32nd ranked nation hasn’t played since 2019 when in Division IIA they barely avoided relegation.
Today the head hockey organization of international hockey made their final call during the council meeting:
The Council confirmed that it will uphold the decision by the 2018 IIHF Congress to grant the Chinese men’s national team a host qualification position in the 2022 Olympic Games.
The KHL had sent a commission to review what the Chinese side would have to offer. In November Kunlun Red Star team iced a roster filled with national team players against KHL squads and they have kept going since. It appears that they have shown capabilities and that swayed IIHF to allow them to participate in the tournament.
The decision originally allowing China to play at the Olympics was made in 2018 via a granted spot for the host country. The questions were raised not long after and many asked – can they be competitive enough? The answer is still no but this was just an easier way for IIHF to get things finally going.
The Chinese national team players will report to their training camp at the end of December. At this point, it’s unknown who’s going but Kunlun Red Star is about to get their roster cut short and dry.
