After being given a green light to participate in the 2022 Winter Olympics Chinese national team now had to figure out what’s next for them. For the longest time it was uncertain when would their training camp begin and what would the future hold for the Kunlun Red Star KHL team.
The answers came today. Kunlun isn’t in danger of losing most of its roster due to PRC and the Olympic Organizing Committee.
The following is a statement from Kunlun Red Star:
HC Beijing Kunlun Red Star is pleased to announce no squad changes for the remainder of KHL 2021/22 season. This became possible as a result of successful negotiations between our club, the leadership of the PRC, and the Organizing Committee of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games
”The initial plan was that our players and coaches would enter China under the protocol, provided for citizens of the country who return from abroad, serving a 21-day quarantine.” meaning that the club would have to release all players of Team China from their roster and sign a brand new team for their KHL club by December 27th which is the KHL trade deadline.
”In preparing for plan A, we also worked on plan B that, from a sporting point of view, was more conducive to our key task – the preparation of the Chinese national team for participation in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. We are very grateful to the PRC sports authorities and the Olympic Games Committee for their understanding and efforts. Thus, the China men’s national team will fly to Beijing on January 26, 2022, for the opening of the Olympic Village, which will take place on January 27. That will allow them to continue participating in the KHL championship and thus prepare for the upcoming Winter Olympic Games. Besides, after the announcement of the final roster of the National team of China, our line-ups for further KHL games will be adjusted respectively.” the statement finished off on a high note.”
Good news for both Team China and Kunlun as the players that will play at the Olympic games will have the ability to get meaningful games under their belt and the team itself.
Rules, however, haven’t changed for the women’s side – the players that play for HC Shenzhen KRS Vanke Rays will carry on as scheduled and report to the training camp on December 26th in order to serve the 21-day quarantine.
Right now it’s estimated that close to twenty players will be representing the Chinese national team at the tournament that is currently under contract with the KHL team.
China will play in Group A against Canada, USA, and Germany.
