The future of the impending unrestricted free agent became the center of attention as we approach the NHL trade deadline. Now, according to Pierre LeBrun, the Sharks were not taking offers for Hertl as they were optimistic a deal ultimately could get down. However, with the clock ticking towards Monday’s deadline, the team could elect to change course and trade their star center considering they are likely on the outside-looking-in when it comes to the postseason this year.

Hertl is playing his ninth season in the NHL, all in San Jose, and has 25 goals and 23 assists in 59 games. His 29 goals are his second-most in a season. It only trails 2018-19’s 35-goal campaign. He had a career-high 74 points that season. Currently, at 48 points and averaging .8 points per game, Hertl is on pace for 66 this season. Now we know, the rest will come with the Sharks.
Originally drafted 17th overall during the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, the 28-year-old Hertl was in the final year of a four-year, $22.5 million contract signed prior to the start of the 2018 season. This new deal will bring him through age 36.
