The first shoe to drop for the Ottawa Senators in advance of Monday’s 3pm ET trade deadline wasn’t forward Nick Paul, Zach Sanford or defenseman Josh Brown, it was the one of the club’s three 2022 third-round draft picks. The team has traded a third-round selection that originally belonged to Vancouver to the Canucks for defenseman Travis Hamonic.

Hamonic, a right-shot blue-liner remains under contract next season. His deal carries a cap hit of $3 million. The 31-year old is owed a $1.25M bonus during the offseason and is scheduled to receive $2M in salary in 2022-23.
Selected 58th overall in 2008 by the New York Islanders, Hamonic will be reunited with Senators associate coach Jack Capuano who was the Isles head coach for all seven seasons played on the Island. Capuano is currently resposnsible for handling his squad’s defensemen.
Hamonic’s next game, possibly at the UBS Arena versus the Islanders Tuesday, brings him full circle. It’s slated to be his 700th career regular season game.

The question remains what’s the status of Hamonic’s game at this juncture?
Waived by the Canucks earlier this season, the 2010 Canadian World Junior silver medallist has recorded three goals, four assists in 24 matches this season.
He’s a plus-1, possessing a 47.7 per cent even-strength Corsi mark, while receiving 18:01 time-on-ice per game.
The Senators’ RD depth chart of Artem Zub, Nikita Zaitsev, Josh Brown is an interesting one as of today.
But this subject to change, and definitely will next season when it’s expected Lassi Thomson joins the group.
Hamonic may also have been targeted to saddle along-side Jake Sanderson when he inevitably arrives.
Off the ice, Hamonic and his wife, Stephanie are extremely active in First Nations communities. Having lost his father at age 10, Hamonic earned the 2017 NHL Foundation Player Award for his community work, inviting children who had lost a parent to games.
