Hurricanes Add Max Domi
The cream of the crop is getting better with the addition of Max Domi. The Hurricanes were quiet for most of the trade deadline until the very end. It came in after the official like most trades do as it was announced the Hurricanes were acquiring Max Domi from Columbus. Domi had been rumored to be traded out of Columbus for the last several weeks. Teams that needed scoring depth were looking to get his services. Nobody expected the Hurricanes to make a trade for Domi as general manager Don Waddell was happy with his team.
However, injuries and other factors sometimes play a role in why certain teams acquire players at the deadline. In 35 games with the Blue Jackets this season 32 points (nine goals and 23 assists). He is a pending UFA at the end of the season, so his salary cap hit of $5.3 million will come off the books. Unless the Hurricanes like what they see from him and decide to re-sign him.

What Carolina Gets In Domi
Like with Kotkoniemi, the Hurricanes are getting a versatile, depth hockey player who can play in the top six. Though with the Hurricanes Domi will likely be playing third-line minutes. However, when times call for it, he can transition to the second line. For what the Hurricanes gave up for Domi this is a good deal.
After being originally drafted 12th overall by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2015 NHL, Domi has bounced around the league playing now for his fourth team. After posting a career-high 28 goals with Coyotes, Arizona traded him to Montreal. After a couple of seasons there, Montreal sent him to Columbus.
To say Domi is a journeyman is an understatement. However, Carolina gets a player who is not afraid of the physical stuff as he will drop the gloves when it is necessary. That bods well for the Hurricanes who expect to make a deep playoff run. Domi’s physicality is what opposing teams fear in the playoffs. He is one of the better passers in the league and hopefully, will get show what he is made of when the Stanley Cup Playoffs come calling.
General manager Don Waddell said that he looked at what other teams around him were doing and decided to make the deal for Domi. More details are coming out but the Florida Panthers are involved in this deal as they will eat some of Domi’s salary to help Carolina with their cap situation.
