Wild Acquire Marc-Andre Fleury
Many were wondering if and when Marc-Andre Fleury was going to get moved. Fleury had been traded from the Vegas Golden Knights to the Chicago Blackhawks prior to the 2021-22 NHL regular season. Chicago thought they had another run in them, but clearly, things were not heading in that direction. However, Fleury controlled all the cards because he had to waive his no-move clause to go to Chicago. And once acquired Fleury and the Blackhawks had a handshake agreement that Fleury had a no-move clause and would choose his next destination if he wanted to get traded.
There were reports linking the Minnesota Wild to Fleury heading into the trade deadline. Other reports had him going North of the border to Toronto or Edmonton. There was a chance may be a reunion in Vegas but that was not going to happen. Instead, a familiar friend stepped up and grabbed Mar-Andre Fleury.
Wild general manager Bill Guerin, who was teammates with Fleury in Pittsburgh in 2009 and was the assistant GM during the Penguins back-to-back Cup runs in 2016 and 2017 knows what Fleury brings to the table. So the connection was there for Fleury to waive his no-move clause to go to Minnesota. Fleury is a three-time Stanley Cup winner and guided the Golden Knights to the Stanley Cup Final in 2018.
What Are the Wild Getting
Fleury still has a lot left in the tank. He was just on a bad Chicago team and faced 40 shots a night and looked tired most nights. The Wild are getting the reigning Vezina Trophy winner from a year ago. And not to mention a goalie that can guide them in the playoffs to make a deep run. This season with the Blackhawks in 45 games, Fleury’s record is 19-21-5 with a 2.95 GAA and .908 save percentage his career, he has a 2.57 GAA and .913 save percentage.
Fleury is what the Wild need to make a deep run in the playoffs. He will be the starter with Cam Talbot backing up. The Wild are moving Kappo Kahkonen to San Jose to fit Fleury in under the salary cap as they don’t need three goalies. Fleury for his career has a record of 90-70 in the playoffs with a 2.53 GAA and .913 save percentage.
