Heading into today’s matchup with the Hurricanes, the Bruins have appeared in game seven five times since winning the Stanley Cup in 2011.
During the Boston Bruins Stanley Cup run of 2011, they reached game seven in three of their four series, including the Final against the Vancouver Canucks. Of course, they were 3-0 in game sevens that season, however, they are just 2-3 in five appearances since. Both of their wins came against the Toronto Maple Leafs and one of their three losses, and their most recent game seven appearance, was a reversal of fortune from their Stanley Cup Final game seven win over the Canucks.
Before the puck drops on the Bruins at Hurricanes on Saturday, let’s take a look at Boston’s five previous game seven appearances since their Stanley Cup win.

2018-19 Stanley Cup Final – vs. St. Louis Blues (June 12th, 2019)
Result: 4-1 L
No doubt the most painful of the game seven losses, the Bruins were seeking their second Stanley Cup title in seven seasons but fell flat in the deciding game against the St. Louis Blues after a 5-1 victory in game six. However, despite it happening just three years ago, this Bruins team has quite a different look in some areas. Both Zdeno Chara and David Krejci are gone. As is Tuukka Rask who played exceptional for much of the postseason run that season but was outplayed by Jordan Binnington in game seven. Of course, the Bruins were less than 90 seconds away from forcing another Stanley Cup Final game seven against the Blackhawks in 2013 but that’s a memory we won’t relive today.
2017-18 Eastern Quarterfinal – vs. Toronto Maple Leafs (April 25th, 2018)
Result: 7-4 W
The Bruins trailed 4-3 entering the third period when the team’s offense erupted to the tune of four goals in the third period. Torey Krug tied the game just a minute into the third followed by Jake DeBrusk‘s second of the game to give the Bruins a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. David Pastrnak added some insurance just over the halfway point of the period before Brad Marchand capped it off with an empty-net goal.
2013-14 Eastern Semi-Final – vs. Montreal Canadiens (May 14th, 2014)
Result: 3-1 L
As is the theme for many of the Bruins’ recent game seven losses, the offense went dormant for much of their game seven against the Canadiens in 2014. This came following a 4-0 loss to Montreal to force this deciding game. Jarome Iginla scored the lone goal for the Bruins late in the second period with the team down 2-0. They couldn’t muster any more offense after that as Carey Price stopped 29-of-30 Boston shots and the Bruins saw their season end on home ice again.
2012-13 Eastern Quarterfinal – vs. Toronto Maple Leafs (May 16th, 2013)
Result: 5-4 W (OT)
In one of the most memorable games in franchise history, the Bruins trailed 4-1 late in the third period to the Maple Leafs before they scored three goals in the final 10 minutes to tie the game and force overtime. Just six minutes in, Patrice Bergeron ended the series with his second goal of the game in front of the TD Garden crowd. The Bruins went all the way to the Stanley Cup Final but ultimately fell to the Blackhawks in six games.
2011-12 Eastern Quarterfinal – vs. Washington Capitals (April 25th, 2012)
Result: 2-1 L (OT)
Coming off the heels of their first Stanley Cup title since 1972, the Bruins had to face the talented Washington Capitals in the first round which saw four of the seven games, including the last one, head to overtime. Unfortunately for the Bruins, just 2:57 into the first overtime of game seven, Joel Ward, not Alexander Ovechkin, ended the Bruins’ season and their championship defense on home ice. It was also the final game for goalie Tim Thomas as a member of the Bruins.
