In a wild first round of the 2022 NHL Draft, the Arizona Coyotes traded for forward Zack Kassian. The Coyotes originally had pick 32, and traded it to the Edmonton Oilers for their 29 pick. With that pick the Yotes selected defenseman Maveric Lamoureux. The Coyotes also received Edmonton’s third round pick in 2024 and their second round pick in 2025.

Lamoureux is a giant of a player who stands 6-foot 7 and 198 pounds. He played in the QMJHL where he had four goals, 20 assists in 54 games. He will more than likely be a project, but you have to like his size.

For Edmonton, Gaining Cap Space Was Key

Kassian carried a $3.2 million cap hit and the Coyotes had plenty of room to add his salary. He will be another large player who can add more size to their roster. The 6-foot 3, 211 pound forward isn’t afraid to hit people. During his 412 games in Edmonton, he handed out 1,000 hits.

With good sized other Arizona players like Lawson Crouse, Nick Ritchie, and Jack McBain opponents will have their challenges to come out of a game healthy. It is general manager Bill Armstrong goal to build a team that will be hard to play against. Adding Kassian helps in that endeavor.

Going Forward

Now the Oilers have over $10 million in cap space in order to sign a goalie like Jack Campbell or Darcy Kuemper. The move for them was purely financial and for the Coyotes they needed to ge to the salary cap basement and add some players to their roster.
