When the Seattle Kraken were announced as the 32nd NHL franchise back in December 2018, it was only a matter of time before news of an attached AHL franchise would come to light. After Seattle’s ownership Oak View Group (OVG) narrowed down its choices to Boise, ID and Palm Springs, CA in May 2019, the official announcement was made for Palm Springs in September 2019. A new downtown arena was initially planned for the team, but a number of factors delayed and ultimately derailed the project.
After OVG pivoted to a new arena site in nearby Palm Desert, the original 2021-22 launch date for the team was postponed to 2022-23. News came out of trademarks and a preferred moniker for the AHL expansion franchise in Fall 2019, but a patent dispute (and resolution) with a major juniors club revealed a frontrunner. The nickname Firebirds was leaked as a favorite, and as Coachella Valley became the preferred location name, the whole thing became official on November 5, 2021 as Seattle introduced the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

Ep 50: Tampa Bay Lightning, Calgary, Playoff Races, Deadline Final Thoughtsby Full Press Coverage on March 11, 2023 at 12:40 pm
Jim and Chris discuss the Lightning's struggles, the Calgary Flames, and […]
Backing up a few months to June, the Kraken organization announced that it was sending its prospects to North Carolina to play with the Charlotte Checkers for the 2021-22 season. Seattle then hired Dan Bylsma be an assistant coach in Charlotte; he was officially named head coach of the Firebirds on June 21, 2022.
With all this in mind, this offseason player tracker will be formatted a little differently than the other 31 AHL teams. All sections except for “New Additions” will be based off of Seattle-contracted players who were in Charlotte. Since only 11 players under contract to Seattle played in Charlotte last year, the “New Additions” section will be much larger than the other three.
Check out who’s joining Coachella Valley for its inaugural season!
(List accurate as of October 27th at 10:55am PT)
