Kirby Dach Signs Extension With Canadiens
The waiting is finally over in Montreal. Fans of the Canadiens can brief a sigh of relief as Dach has signed his extension with the team. Recall, that the Canadiens acquired Dach on the first night of the NHL Draft from the Chicago Blackhawks. Montreal traded defenceman Alexander Romanov to the New York Islanders for the 13th overall pick. The Canadiens flipped that pick to Chicago to acquire the young center. With this “bridge deal” Dach can now develop under head coach Martin St. Louis for more than just two seasons.
Dach was originally drafted by the Blackhawks third overall in the 2019 NHL Draft. Through 152 games in the NHL, Dach has recorded 59 points (15 goals and 44 assists) with the Blackhawks. Including 26 points (nine goals and 17 assists) in 70 games last season with Chicago. Dach has not fully developed just yet due to injuries and COVID as his upside is so high.
He is still so young and will fit in with what the Canadiens are doing under general manager Kent Hughes and President of Hockey Ops Jeff Gorton are doing. With the Canadiens Juraj Slafkovsky with the first overall pick this year, the Canadiens wanted sure up the center position. The addition of Dach does that. Let’s see where he slots in on the depth chart in St. Louis’s system.

Going Forward
This is a nice little bump for Dach who is coming off the entry-level deal that paid him $925,000. The Canadiens are expecting him to produce line as a top-six forward. With the acquisition of Sean Monahan, the pressure is off Dach now. They can move him from the center position to the wing if necessary to get his production up. As previously mentioned Dach has tremendous upside. Only time will tell if this gamble pays off.
