Improving Sabres Lock Up GM Kevyn Adams On Multi-Year Extension

The Buffalo Sabres have missed the playoffs the last 11 seasons and have seemingly been in rebuild mode for most of that period, but the club appears to have turned the corner under General manager Kevyn Adams, who was rewarded with a multi-year contract extension on Wednesday.

The Western New York native played with six teams (Toronto, Columbus, Florida, Carolina, Phoenix, and Chicago) during his 11-year NHL career, won a Stanley Cup in 2006 with the Hurricanes, and after serving a variety of roles over 11 years with Buffalo replaced Jason Botterill as GM in June 2020.

After finishing dead last in the league and firing head coach Ralph Krueger in his first season, the Sabres began to show an upward trajectory under Don Granato last season, with youngsters Rasmus Dahlin and Tage Thompson showing significant improvement. Although Buffalo is a long shot to make the playoffs in 2023, the club looks to be on the right track under Adams, Granato and a mixture of young players and veterans.

“Kevyn’s leadership and vision over the past two seasons has proven to be invaluable, and I am confident in his ability to continue to move us forward as an organization,” Sabres owner Terry Pegula said in a press release. “He is respected by players, coaches, staff, and peers around the league alike due to the poise with which he carries himself and the respect he reciprocates to every individual he encounters. He has grown in different roles throughout the organization, providing him unique perspectives that help him perform at the highest level as general manager.”

Adams brought back good returns for longtime Sabres Sam Reinhart and Rasmus Ristolainen before last season, but his biggest achievement was engineering the Jack Eichel trade with the Vegas Golden Knights last November, recouping a 2022 first-round pick, and forwards Alex Tuch and Peyton Krebs for the former team captain.
