MacKenzie Weegar Commits To Calgary Long Term
The Calgary Flames acquired MacKenzie Weegar along with Jonathan Huberdeau, Cole Schwindt and a conditional 2025 first-round pick when they traded Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers. At the time of the trade, many believed Flames general manager Brad Treliving was a genius for getting two players of that calibre in return. Most rated the trade as a good one for the Flames. His grade would have been a B+ or A-. Now, it is an A+ as he has locked up Weegar and Huberdeau to long-term extensions.
Weegar has been one of the league’s top two-way defencemen in the past three seasons. He has an excellent transition game, being such an elite rusher of the puck which the Flames can use to their advantage under head coach Darryl Sutter. In addition, Weegar can drive the play five-on-five while being a great stay-at-home defenceman in his own zone.

With the Flames in contention to win now, Treliving got a bargain for Weegar at $6.25 million. Not to mention like Huberdeau, Weegar was open to signing an extension in Calgary. And with the deal done, the Flames are one of the favourites to not only win the Pacific again but the Stanley Cup.
Weegar was originally drafted in the 7th round of the 2013 NHL by the Panthers. In 306 career games, Weegar has recorded 121 points (27 goals and 94 assists) with 259 penalty minutes. Last season, Weegar was 26th in scoring for defencemen with 44 points (eight goals and 36 assists) in 80 games. Weegar has played in 20 playoff games recording five points (one goal and four assists).
