Timo Meier Traded To The New Jersey Devils

The San Jose Sharks have traded forward Timo Meier to the New Jersey Devils. As part of the deal, the Devils also received Scott Harrington, Timur Ibragimov, Santeri Hatakka, Zachary Edmond and a 2024 5th-round draft pick in exchange for Fabian Zetterlund, a 2023 first-round pick, Nikita Okhotiuk, Andreas Johnsson, Shakir Mukhamadulin plus a conditional 2024 first-round pick. The Sharks will retain 50 percent of Meier’s salary.

League trade call is done. Timo Meier is officially a New Jersey Devil.

Timo Meier Traded To The Devils

It finally happened as the Sharks are parting ways with restricted free agent Timo Meier. Meier had been rumoured for months to be traded. Several teams had been linked to Meier including the Devils. New Jersey was the front-runner for quite some time now and things picked up Sunday once it was announced Carolina was out of the running for Meier’s services and Vegas traded for Ivan Barbashev.

General manager Tom Fitzgerald presented the perfect package to the Sharks in exchange for Meier. Details are still coming in on what the package is.

FullPressHockey.com put a list of top trade targets with Meier being number two on our board. The Devils and Meier have ties with Swiss National teammates Nico Hischier and Jonas Seigenthaler on the club. This is why it made sense for the Devils to acquire him.

This versatile forward is only getting better with age. This season in 57 games with the Sharks, Meier has 52 points (31 goals and 21 assists). Meier has now recorded three 30-goal seasons with the Sharks including back-to-back seasons with 30 or more goals. He is on pace to set a career-high in goals. Meier set his career high of 35 goals last season with the Sharks.

With the Devils in a prime position to make the playoffs for the first time since 2018, Fitzgerald knew he had to make a splash prior to the deadline. Acquiring a top-six forward was a priority for the Devils and Fitzgerald. He was their number-one target from the start.

While the Devils wanted an extension as part of the deal, they became comfortable without having Meier sign an extension.

Tom Fitzgerald got his man as Timo Meier is officially a member of the New Jersey Devils without giving up Alexander Holtz, Simon Nemec, Luke Hughes or Dawson Mercer.
