Welcome to another edition of Full Press Hockey’s NHL Rumors! The 2022-23 regular season is more than halfway done and players will be evaluated. Now, with the trade deadline just days away, rumors are sizzling.
Clubs are always working to improve their rosters for next season. Some teams are having difficulty creating enough cap space to make moves. Others are experiencing severe injuries to star players. Trade rumors/signings are still possible. In this Wednesday’s edition of NHL Rumors, we will look at the Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, and the Vancouver Canucks.

Ep 51: Stanley Cup Playoff Bubble Teams; Connor McDavid On WBC Successby Full Press Coverage on March 22, 2023 at 11:54 pm
Jim and Chris are back and are talking about the playoff races in the East […]
Pittsburgh Penguins – Brock Boeser/J.T. Miller
Rumor: Per – David Pagnotta – thefourthperiod.com. The Penguins are seriously attempting to create some cap space. Are they contemplating a trade?
Believe talk between VAN/PIT has progressed quite a bit. If this gets done, the Canucks are expected to retain part of Boeser's contract. https://t.co/QKyy24xXEG
— David Pagnotta (@TheFourthPeriod) February 28, 2023
Boeser has a $6.65 million cap hit through the 2024-25 season. Even if the Pens can create about $5 million in cap space, they will need the Canucks to retain salary, which they are not too fond of doing.
As far as Miller goes, Pagnotta reported that even though he has a seven-year $56 million deal starting next season, he could still be dealt. Several teams have reached out to inquire about Miller, including the Carolina Hurricanes. If something doesn’t materialize by the trade deadline on Friday, the two clubs could talk again in the summer.
Another option for the Pens could still be learching in the background. And, that could be the possibility of acquiring Jakob Chychrun. His cap hit of $4.6 million is attractive and he’s signed for two more seasons after this year.
Philadelphia Flyers – Kevin Hayes/James van Riemsdyk
Rumor: Per – Frank Seravalli – dailyfaceoff.com/Kevin Weekes – @espn @NHL @NHLNetwork@TSNHockey. The Flyers have lost eight of 10, which means it’s time to be a seller before the trade deadline.
Seravalli stated, the market has “heated up” on Hayes in the “last 24-48 hours with intelligence that the Flyers are willing to retain some salary on a transaction in order to facilitate a deal.” Hayes carries a $7.14 million cap hit, good through 2025-26 with a modified no-trade clause including a 12-team no-trade list. It must be noted that head coach John Tortorella and Hayes do not see eye-to-eye, which could have something to do with his trade status. Dreger reports that at least three teams may have interest in Hayes. They include the Colorado Avalanche, Minnesota Wild, and Carolina Hurricanes. With the Flyers willing to retain some salary in any prospective deal, this may help get it done.
**Keep an eye 👁️ on **
Action is heating up among Buyers on @NHLFlyers F Van Riemsdyk . Over 900 career GP, good hands and scoring touch with size in the net front role. @espn @NHL @NHLNetwork @TSNHockey @DKSportsbook #HockeyTwitter— Kevin Weekes (@KevinWeekes) February 27, 2023
Weekes reports that van Riemsdyk could be on the move. He has good hands, and size in front of the net, and doesn’t need that? His $7 million cap hit may prevent some teams from making a deal. What could happen is if a club was looking for the power forward type like Timo Meier and lost out, JVR would be a good alternative.

Vancouver Canucks – Thatcher Demko
Rumor: Per – Andy Strickland – Rinkside Reporter Bally Sports Midwest. Demko is 27, and signed through the 2025-26 season at $5 million, a contract that is very reasonable for a starting netminder.
Demko may not want to stick around with the Vancouver club who has such players as Luke Schenn, Brock Boeser, Conor Garland, Tyler Myers, J.T. Miller, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson in trade rumors. As for potential destinations, the Pittsburgh Penguins make a ton of sense as both Canucks President Jim Rutherford and general manager Patrik Allvin came from the organization. They know Tristan Jarry well and could likely get a contract extension completed before this upcoming offseason if a goalie swap came to pass.
Demko could actually get some better defense in front of him if he were to go to the Penguins. The Pittsburgh club only allows 3.20 goals a game as compared to the porous defense of the Canucks at 3.97 goals per game. With Jarry becoming a free agent after this season, he will be looking for an increase from his $3.5 million contract. Goalie trades are infrequent, but this one may just help both teams.
That concludes this edition of NHL rumors. Be sure to catch our next article, and thanks for reading!
