Carson Gicewicz is Headed to Rochester

You couldn’t have thought the Rockford IceHogs were done making moves, right? With the March 2 NHL Trade Deadline looming every closer, teams around the NHL and AHL have been quite busy. This is one of the most active deadline weeks that I can remember. It’s exciting, but also anxiety-inducing as there seems to be a new move every time you blink.

Today, Rockford got back in the action, sending forward Carson Gicewicz to the Rochester Americans in exchange for the ever-popular future considerations.

This move by the team from the Forest City follows a trend set by the Chicago Blackhawks earlier this season. Evan Barratt and Nicolas Beaudin were given change-of-scenery moves to be closer to home. Gicewicz, a native of Orchard Park, NY, finds himself back in his home state with the Americans.

So, What Are The Americans Getting?

Gicewicz is a 25-year-old center that brings size and an edge to the roster. He’s 6’3 and not afraid to throw his weight around a bit. He’s in his second full professional season after a 10-game debut after the 2020-21 UMass collegiate season concluded. In his young AHL career, Gicewicz has nine goals and 13 assists in 114 games. In the playoffs last year, he recorded one goal and one assist in five games. This season with the IceHogs, he has four goals (one away from his season high of five from last year) and two assists.

Gicewicz is a decent depth addition that can eat up some minutes while occasionally pitching in a point or two. He won’t set the world on fire, but he also won’t burn his team. Along with his on-ice play, Rochester is getting a good locker room guy that is always smiling around the rink.

As for the future considerations part of the deal, it was completed before this trade was announced. So, perhaps “Recent Acquisition” is a better term. The Chicago Blackhawks received Anders Bjork from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for — you guessed it — future considerations! With Gicewicz being on an AHL-only deal, he couldn’t be included in the initial trade by the Blackhawks. So, this deal wraps up the future being considered.

Whether Bjork appears with the IceHogs in their playoff push remains to be seen.
