NHL 2023 Playoff Races as of March 21, 2023

Welcome to a new series from Full Press Hockey. With NHL rumors slowing down until the summer draft, we will only cover them once a week on Sundays. To replace the Wednesday rumors article, we will present a daily analysis of the playoff races called NHL 2023 playoff races. The analysis will be done daily when enough games affecting the playoffs are scheduled, with the article being published every morning after games are played. We will cover trends in the standings, and which teams are hot and which teams are not. With less than 20 games remaining in the 2022-23 season, all NHL fans will be tracking their team’s progress to see where they will finish.

Florida Panthers vs Detroit Red Wings

Aleksander Barkov set the Florida franchise record for most career points, Carter Verhaeghe scored two goals, and the streaking Panthers beat the Detroit Red Wings for the ninth consecutive time, 5-2 on Monday night. Matthew Tkachuk had a goal and two assists, giving him 14 points over the last five games. The Florida victory coupled with the Penguins loss advanced the Panthers past the Pens into the final wild-card spot with 12 games remaining.

Ottawa Senators vs Pittsburgh Penguins

Drake Batherson‘s power-play goal from in front with 2:09 left in regulation lifted the Ottawa Senators to a 2-1 win over the reeling Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday night. This loss was vital to the Penguins playoff hopes. It was their fourth straight defeat, and they fell out of the last wild-card spot. To make matters worse, they play Colorado on Wednesday and Dallas on Thursday, both on the road.

Chicago Blackhawks vs Colorado Avalanche

Alexandar Georgiev made 27 saves and Denis Malgin had two goals and an assist, helping the surging Colorado Avalanche beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-0 on Monday night. the win lifted Colorado (41-22-6) into a tie with idle Minnesota for second place in the Central Division with 88 points, one behind Dallas. The Avalanche have played one less game than the Wild and Stars, and have won six straight.

San Jose Sharks vs Edmonton Oilers

Newly acquired defenseman Mattias Ekholm tied the game at the 16:13 mark with his second tally of the game, forcing overtime. Darnell Nurse came through with the game-winner with just 15 seconds remaining in overtime. Erik Karlsson scored his 21st and 22nd goals of the season to give him 87 points on the year.

Calgary Flames vs Los Angeles Kings

Drew Doughty and Viktor Arvidsson scored in Los Angeles’ four-goal first period, Adrian Kempe had two goals and an assist, and the Kings cruised into a first-place tie in the Pacific Division with an 8-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Monday night.
