2023 NHL Playoff Races as of April 13, 2023

Welcome to a new series from Full Press Hockey. With NHL rumors slowing down until the summer draft, we will only cover them once a week on Sundays. To replace the Wednesday rumors article, we will present a daily analysis of the playoff races called NHL 2023 playoff races. The analysis will be done daily when enough games affecting the playoffs are scheduled, with the article being published every morning after games are played. We will cover trends in the standings, and which teams are hot and which teams are not. With just final games remaining in the 2022-23 season, all NHL fans will be tracking their team’s progress to see where they will finish, and how the matchups line up.

Washington Capitals vs Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins saved their latest record-setting performance of the season for their home crowd. Brad Marchand and Tyler Bertuzzi had power play goals and the Bruins broke the NHL points record with a 5-2 victory over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night in their regular-season home finale.

Under chants of “We want the Cup!” from fans inside TD Garden the Bruins’ won their seventh straight to push their points total to 133, one more than the 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens. Those Canadiens played in an era without overtime and shootouts. The Bruins have 11 extra points – five for shootout wins and six for overtime wins – unavailable to Canadiens when they set the record.

Detroit Red Wings vs Carolina Hurricanes

Stefan Noesen and Jordan Martinook scored early and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on Tuesday night to maintain their hold on first place in the Metropolitan Division with one game remaining in the regular season. Carolina has 111 points, one more than the New Jersey Devils. A victory Thursday night at Florida would give the Hurricanes a division title for the third season in a row. With Tuesday’s result, the Hurricanes clinched a home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Buffalo Sabres vs New Jersey Devils

While they still don’t know who they are going to play in the first round of the NHL playoffs with one game left in the regular season, the New Jersey Devils are going to have a home ice advantage against somebody. Tomas Tatar had two goals and an assist and the Devils nailed down the home ice edge and ended Buffalo’s postseason hopes with a 6-2 victory over the Sabres on Tuesday night. Jeff Skinner and Mattias Samuelsson scored for the Sabres, whose late run wasn’t enough to earn the franchise its first playoff berth since 2011. The 12-year run is the NHL’s current longest postseason drought. Emerging 21-year-old star Devon Levi made 24 saves in losing for the second time in six starts.

Columbus Blue Jackets vs Philadelphia Flyers

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Tampa Bay Lightning

Minor league call-up Joseph Woll made 46 saves, William Nylander had a goal and two assists, and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 on Tuesday night in a preview of an opening round playoff series next week. Tampa Bay beat Toronto in the first round of last season’s playoffs en route to its third straight trip to the Stanley Cup Final. The Maple Leafs rested forwards Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner, and defenseman Mark Giordano. Matt Onuska from Windsor of the OHL served as the backup goalie due to salary cap issues.

Chicago Blackhawks vs Pittsburgh Penguins

 Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and the Pittsburgh Penguins have been an NHL playoff fixture for the better part of two decades. It’s a run that’s produced three Stanley Cups, a near miss at another and likely fast-tracked all three franchise icons to the Hall of Fame.

And now, it may finally be over.

Buddy Robinson and Andreas Athanasiou scored 26 seconds apart in the third period and the lowly Chicago Blackhawks dealt the Penguins’ playoff chances a significant blow in a 5-2 win on Tuesday night. Pittsburgh began the night needing wins in its last two games over Chicago and Columbus to extend the longest active playoff streak in major North American professional sports to 17 years.

Winnipeg Jets vs Minnesota Wild

The Winnipeg Jets have found their groove just in time, after stumbling through much of the winter. With their spot in the playoffs clinched, now Connor Hellebuyck can get a break. Mark Scheifele scored his 42nd goal, Hellebuyck made 33 saves and the Jets secured the second wild card spot in the Western Conference with a 3-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night.

Edmonton Oilers vs Colorado Avalanche

Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers want to be playing good hockey – their best brand of hockey – going into the postseason. This definitely qualifies: The Oilers are on an eight-game winning streak and McDavid is on a 15-game points streak. Evan Bouchard scored a power-play goal 1:50 into overtime, Stuart Skinner stopped 28 shots and the Oilers keep rolling along, beating the Colorado Avalanche 2-1 on Tuesday night. The Oilers remain in the chase for the Pacific Division title with one game remaining. They also extended their points streak to 14 straight games.

Vancouver Canucks vs Anaheim Ducks

Seattle Kraken vs Vegas Golden Knights

The Vegas Golden Knights have one game left to win the Pacific Division, and Michael Amadio is a key reason why they’re in that position. He had two goals and an assist in a 4-1 victory over the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday night. Edmonton’s 2-1 overtime victory over Colorado on Tuesday prevented the Knights from clinching the Pacific.

Montreal Canadiens vs New York Islanders

Brock Nelson scored twice as the New York Islanders beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-2 Wednesday night and clinched a playoff berth. The Islanders are awaiting the outcome of the Florida Panthers-Carolina Hurricanes game on Thursday to determine their first-round playoff opponent. New York missed the postseason last year, and that led to the firing of head coach Barry Trotz in May. The Islanders’ victory also eliminated Pittsburgh from the postseason race, ending the Penguins’ run of playoff appearances at 16 years, the longest active playoff streak in major North American professional sports.

Dallas Stars vs St. Louis Blues

Wyatt Johnston scored twice, Tyler Seguin had a goal and an assist and the Dallas Stars beat the St. Louis Blues 5-2 on Wednesday night to take the Central Division lead. Dallas moved ahead of idle Colorado for the top spot in the Central with 106 points. Colorado has 105 points but has two games left to one at home against St. Louis on Thursday night for the Stars.
