Jayson Shaugabay is a Wild Card in the 2023 NHL Draft

Jayson Shaugabay is a player that’s very well-known in Minnesota, but hockey fans may soon hear about him. He’s a 5’9.5” forward who has first-round skills. Will teams see him as a first-rounder, or will they let him drop?

This prospect had a great high school career that ended with him winning the prestigious Mr. Hockey Award. Former winners of this award include Casey Mittelstadt (Sabres), Nick Bjugstad (Oilers), Nick Leddy (Blues), and Ryan McDonagh (Preds) to name a few. This year for Warroad High, where he was the captain, he scored 33 goals and had 63 assists in just 31 games. He is the school’s all-time leading scorer going past TJ Oshie (Capitals). High school numbers or not, when you are scoring at a clip of 3.09 points per game, you should take notice.

One thing is for sure. His likes and dislikes might surprise you.

“I don’t like fishing. I like to golf. I’m like a one handicap I would say. I’m pretty good,” Shaugabay stated. “I’ve been playing ever since I could play hockey. Since I was four years old. I fell in love with hockey. When I was younger, I was probably better at golf, than I was in hockey. It was kind of like either or when I was younger.”

After his high school season ended, he headed to play in Green Bay in the USHL. In 27 games, he had 16 points in 27 games. And he got some playoff experience as well. That’s a solid partial season in a very tough league. Now next year, he has a choice of going back to the USHL or he can play for Minnesota Duluth where he’s committed.

Shaugabay could be one of the best playmakers in the draft. He’s a great passer. He’s very patient and will wait out a play. His hockey I.Q. and accurate wrist shot give him a package of first-round skills but some teams may shy away from him because he’s a high school player and that could mean a long development path his height isn’t ideal and weighing 167 pounds could scare away some teams.

If a team doesn’t jump at him towards the end of the first round, surely he will go in the second round. There’s always a run of very talented players at the top of the second and this draft will be no different.

Remember his name. He could surprise a lot of people in the coming years.
