New Jersey Devils To Host Stadium Series Game

While there has been no formal announcement, it is being reported that the New Jersey Devils will be returning back to the Meadowlands to host a Stadium Series game at MetLife Stadium in February 2024. Their opponents that day will be the Philadelphia Flyers.

I’m told the NHL is going to host 2 Stadium Series games next season in February 2024 at MetLife Stadium on back-to-back days involving 4 teams: Devils/Flyers and Isles/Rangers

It is the first time the Devils will play a game in the Meadowlands since May 5, 2007. On that day the Devils lost Game 5 against the Ottawa Senators in Round 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals being eliminated from the playoffs. At the start of the 2007-08 season, the Devils moved to Prudential Center in Newark.

Though the Devils will not be playing inside the old Brendan Byrne Arena, they are returning back to where it all began for the franchise. Dr. John McMullen relocated the Colorado Rockies franchise to the Meadowlands and renamed the club the New Jersey Devils. Local lure has of the “Jersey Devil” from a fan poll. Though the Jersey Devil lived in the Pine Barrens of South Jersey, having the arena in the swamp lands of the Meadowlands, added to the lure of the team.

Though it was a struggle early on, the Devils rose to prominence under then President/General Manager Lou Lamoriello. The team made the playoffs in 1988 going on a miracle run to the Wales Conference Final losing to the Boston Bruins. Under Lamoriello’s time in the Meadowlands, the Devils went to four Stanley Cup Finals winning three of them before moving to Newark.

It is a nostalgic moment for fans who have been fans of the New Jersey Devils since 1982. The Devils will return home to where it all began for this franchise in New Jersey in February of 2024.

Originally Kevin Weekes had reported months back that MetLife Stadium was in the running for a Stadium Series game.

There will be two Stadium Series games in 2024. There will get two games on back-to-back days. After the Devils and Flyers play, the New York Rangers and New York Islanders will play the following day.

The Devils are not strangers to the outdoor game. They played in the Yankee Stadium Stadium Series in 2014 losing to their Hudson River Rivals the New York Rangers. The Flyers have played in five outdoor games including two Winter Classics, Two Stadium Series games, and the game in Lake Tahoe.

The Islanders only outdoor game appearance was in 2014 against the Rangers at Yankee Stadium. While the Rangers will be making their fifth trip outside. The Rangers are 4-0 in their previous four games including two Stadium Series and Two Winter Classic games.

This will be a hot ticket for fans of the game in the tri-state area.
