Devils Re-Sign Timo Meier To New Eight-Year Contract

The New Jersey Devils have announced they have re-signed restricted free-agent Timo Meier. Meier’s new contract is for eight years worth $8.8 million annually.

Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald‘s busy offseason continues. After trading Damon Severson to Columbus and locking up Jesper Bratt on a long-term deal, his next order of business what to get Meier done. And he did. Put two big checkmarks on Fitzgerald’s accomplishment board for the summer.

The Devils acquired Meier at the NHL Trade Deadline in March of 2023. It was unclear if the Devils could get an extension done prior to the trade going down. Fitzgerald took a risk acquiring the player without an extension. Considering what the Devils gave up.

However, Fitzgerald’s plan was put into place. He wanted Meier to see how great New Jersey was. Fitzgerald knew how great the state and the team were, but Meier needed to see it for himself. It also helps when you have fellow Swiss teammates on the Devils in the likes of Nico Hischier, Jonas Seigenthaler, and Akira Schmid. It made the transition for Meier very easy.

Fitzgerald had stated after the signing of Bratt he was negotiating with Meier’s agent Claude Lemieux. The Devils general manager also stated that Meier told his agent that he wanted an eight-year deal to stay in New Jersey.

Everyone knew the process was going to be long. But time was on the side of the Devils and Meier. Fitzgerald knew what he was doing when he decided to file for team-elected arbitration for Meier. This gave the Devils even more time to negotiate a contract. The Devils were not going to re-sign Meier at his $10 million qualifying offer. This was a move to get it lowered by 15 percent and have the advantage to talk because these arbitration dates are not decided until the end of July and August.

This was a calculated move that paid for the Devils and Tom Fitzgerald. New Jersey has their big gun in Timo Meier locked long term. Meier will grow with the nucleus of the team which includes Jack Hughes, Dougie Hamilton, Bratt, and Hischier. The Devils have positioned themselves to be a contending team for a long time.

In 472 career NHL games, Meier has recorded 330 points (163 goals and 167 assists). During the 2022-23 season, Meier recorded 66 points (40 goals and 26 assists). He had four points including two goals and two assists during the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs with the Devils.
