Carolina Hurricanes Land Dmitry Orlov, Re-sign Others

The Carolina Hurricanes landed one of the highly regarded free agents today when they signed Dmitry Orlov to a two-year $7.75 million AAV deal. The Boston Bruins tried their darndest to keep Orlov as he showed excellent play while with them. In the end, the Bruins ran out of cap space… a familiar issue in the NHL. He had collected four goals and 13 assists in just 23 games. Prior to that, he added three goals and 16 assists in 43 games with the Washington Capitals.

Many teams were after Orlov, but the Canes got it done. He will certainly add a new element to the Carolina club. And, hopefully, be able to help them advance further in the playoffs next season. The Canes did advance to the East Conference Final last season, only to be swept by the Florida Panthers. Adding Orlov can do nothing but help the Hurricanes move upward.

Canes Have Been Busy on Free Agency Day

Not only did the team add Orlov, but they re-signed three of their free agents also. Jesper Fast re-signed for two years with a $2.4 million AAV deal. He had 10 goals, 19 assists last season and also contributed six goals, three assists in 15 playoff contests. The right-winger will be back for at least two more years.

Then, the Canes also re-signed both of their goalies, Frederik Andersen (two years, $3.4M AAV), and Antti Raanta (one year, $1.5M). This duo played very well together and we should see them help carry this team towards the Eastern Conference Final once again. They were able to show a 2.56 goals-against-average, which ranked them second in the NHL. Adding in Orlov can only increase that success.

Finally, it is being rumored that the Canes are in the process of signing forward Michael Bunting to a three-year $4.5 million deal. That would be a really BIG signing as the Canes are getting it done! Bunting had 23 goals, 26 assists in 82 games last season. To summarize, the Carolina Hurricanes covered the blue line, the net, and scoring in today’s free agency frenzy. Watch out for the Canes next season, they are going to be tough.
