SEASON SYNOPSIS
Injuries at both the AHL and NHL levels, as well as the inevitable deadline moves by the Chicago Blackhawks, significantly impacted the Rockford IceHogs last season. While they started out strong, and at times leading the Central Division, Rockford struggled down the stretch. The IceHogs snuck into the playoffs on the final day of the season.
Their final regular-season record was 35-28-5-4, placing them fifth in the Central Division. In the first round of the playoffs, they swept the Iowa Wild, winning both games in overtime. In the Central Division Semifinals, the IceHogs’ luck ran out as they were swept by the Texas Stars. Rockford struggled to counter Texas’ scoring, as they were outscored 13-6 in the three-game series.

Ep 69: NHL Preseason, Rumors, Mike Babcock Saga
by Full Press Coverage on September 24, 2023 at 4:07 am
Jim and Chris are back to discuss the beginning of the NHL preseason, the […]
Special teams were a struggle for the IceHogs this season. While their power play at times showed some creative structure and set-ups, they seemed to regress throughout the season into something more static and less successful. In the regular season, their power play converted with a 16.3% success rate, tying them for 28th in the league. The IceHogs also allowed 12 shorthanded goals in the regular season, fourth-most in the league. They were slightly better over five games in the playoffs, converting at 17.6%, or 16th out of 23 teams.
Rockford’s penalty kill struggled as well. In the regular season, they were successful 70% of the time, placing them 24th in the league. In the playoffs, their 71.4% success rate on the penalty kill placed them 19th out of 23 teams.
The trio of David Gust, Brett Seney, and Lukas Reichel dominated together for much of the season for the IceHogs. Seney and Gust, both veteran players, will be returning to the IceHogs next season, while it’s expected for Reichel to get another shot at sticking in the NHL.
While the Blackhawks organization hasn’t done much yet in terms of signing players for the Rockford IceHogs, there will be some new faces in the lineup next season. Of particular interest is Colton Dach, who’s completed his WHL career. Dach, brother of former Blackhawks prospect Kirby, is an excellent shooter and should bring some much-needed offense to the IceHogs.
Also of interest is goaltender Drew Commesso. The 20-year old signed his first professional contract earlier this year after his NCAA season came to an end. Commesso’s Boston University team lost in the Frozen Four Semifinals to the University of Minnesota. Commesso put up excellent numbers in both juniors and college and could potentially solidify Chicago’s future in net.
