SEASON SYNOPSIS
The Coachella Valley Firebirds had a fantastic inaugural season that brought them all the way to the Calder Cup Finals. While a Cup was not in the cards for them in 2022-23, they still had a lot to celebrate in their first year as a team and affiliated the Seattle Kraken.
The Firebirds finished the regular season second overall in the AHL just behind the Calgary Wranglers. This also put them second in the Pacific Division. They battled with Calgary all year for that top spot and it came down to the last game of the year where they just came up short. Their regular season record was 48-17-5-2 and their points finished up at 103.Â

Ep 68: Auston Matthews Extension, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Much More
by Full Press Coverage on September 1, 2023 at 2:23 am
Jim and Chris are back to chat about the Auston Matthews extension, the […]
In the postseason, Coachella Valley played a best-of-three series against the Tucson Roadrunners to start. They won that series two games to one. In the second round, they faced the Colorado Eagles for a best-of-five series, winning three games to two. In the next round, they faced the Calgary Wranglers, where they won the series three to two.
In the conference finals, they faced the Milwaukee Admirals, where the games increased to a best-of-seven and they won four games to two. In the finals, they faced the Hershey Bears and despite their best efforts, they fell in Game 7 and were runner-up to this season’s championship.Â
Max McCormick led the team in points with 28 goals and 39 assists through the regular season for a total of 67 points. Behind him was Kole Lind, who finished the year with 30 goals and 32 assists for a total of 62 points. The third skater in team scoring was Tye Kartye, who earned 28 goals and 29 assists for 57 total points.Â
In playoffs, Lind led the team in scoring with nine goals and 22 assists for 31 total points. McCormick still cracked the top three and led in goals with 14. His points total was up to 27 with another 14 assists tacked on in the postseason.Â
Between the pipes, Joey Daccord was a workhorse for Coachella Valley in the regular season and especially in the playoffs. He played in all 26 postseason games and finished up with a 2.22 GAA, a .926 save percentage and a 15-11-0 record. In the regular season, he was right near the best netminders in the league with 38 games played, a 2.38 GAA, .918 save percentage and a 26-8-3-3 record.Â
Their season play earned the Firebirds the title of Western Conference Champions. Individually, Andrew Poturalski and Ryker Evans earned All-Star recognitions and represented Coachella Valley at All-Star weekend in February. Kartye was also recognized as the AHL’s best rookie, being awarded the Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award.
