Rangers Announced Several Changes To Their Hockey Operations Staff

The Rangers announced several changes to their Hockey Operations staff on Friday. Several of these had already been reported, but the full population of the additions were revealed in their press release. New York brings the organization a fresh voice and perspective with their hirings.

Hmura was added earlier this offseason to the Rangers’ coaching staff as a skills and performance development coach. Most Blueshirts’ fans have been clamoring for an upgrade here and also for a full-time skating coach. Years ago, Barbara Underhill aided in that regard and her work with Brian Boyle assisted him in garnering a roster spot by improving his skating speed. Jessica Campbell was hired last year but left before even joining the squad to become an assistant coach in the minors. Hmura, who in his capacity should fill the role of skating coach, replaces Mark Ciaccio, who was previously in this role and voluntarily switched to become a prospect development skills coach. I am not sure Ciaccio working with prospects is a great idea, but in adding Hmura, at least they now have someone who hopefully fills a major area of need.

Mara, a former defenseman for the team who played parts of three seasons with the Rangers from 2006 to 2009, joins as a player development assistant. Having him and Phil Housley work with the defense, presuming that will be his focus, is not a bad idea. Mara wasn’t elite but solid and recently coached two seasons for Boston Pride of the Premier Hockey Federation. In addition, he has served as the assistant coach of the USA National Women’s Team.

Rodgers and Yates round out the hirings. Rodgers comes to New York after spending the past five seasons as Physical Therapist and Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Yates spent parts of the past two seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers in the hockey analytics department. Overall, a material modification and hopefully upgrade in the hockey ops staff. Drury is certainly putting his stamp on the organization, adding individuals that he wants while replacing others and creating new roles.
