Ep 68: Auston Matthews Extension, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Much More
by Full Press Coverage on September 1, 2023 at 2:23 am
Jim and Chris are back to chat about the Auston Matthews extension, the […]
NHL rumors in this edition include:
Will the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Islanders pull of a major blockbuster trade involving Mitch Marner? Will the Bruins trade Jake DeBrusk? Will the Rangers and Winnipeg Jets swing a deal involving major players from both teams?
New York Islanders – Mitch Marner
Rumor: Per – James Wilson – nhltraderumors.me. While there are no impending indications that a blockbuster trade involving Mitch Marner can be confirmed, both teams could benefit from this proposed swap of players.
The magnitude of a major proposed trade like this could be felt by both teams. The Islanders would be getting an excellent playmaker who contributed 30 goals and 69 assists in 80 games last season. He has an expensive $10.9 million contract through the 2024-25 season. Of course, the Leafs are one of the most cap-strapped teams in the NHL. At this point, they are still trying to determine how to keep William Nylander who becomes a free agent next summer. Trading Marner may become necessary if Nylander receives the type of deal in the $9.5-$10 million range he expects.

For the Islanders who would give up Noah Dobson and Alexander Romanov, in addition to Kyle Palmieri, the addition of a premier offensive player like Marner must be weighed heavily for its merits. The salaries almost match with just a $600,000 difference. Marner would most assuredly move the Isles offense to a new level. Don’t underestimate GM Lou Lamoriello’s objective here. He wants to win, and Marner could help him reshape that objective. The downside for the Islanders would be losing Noah Dobson. He is just 23 years old and a budding blueliner. Romanov and Palmieri are just there to make the numbers work for this proposed deal.
Like most trades, it must help both teams, and this one seems to accomplish that. Will it happen? Who knows? But if it does, it may shake the NHL rumors world.
Boston Bruins – Jake DeBrusk
Rumor: Per – Jimmy Murphy – bostonhockeynow.com. In his first public comments since early May, Boston Bruins winger Jake DeBrusk made it clear how he hopes contract talks with the Bruins go.
“I’m hoping to stay [with the Boston Bruins]. It’s the only team that I know and the team that I grew up with,” DeBrusk told NHL.com at the Perry Pearn 3 vs. 3 Hockey Camp this past Tuesday. “Hopefully, it goes in that direction, and we’ll see how it goes. That’s why I have an agent (Rick Valette), and I told him I wanted to stay out of this one, and in time, it’ll be nice when it all gets done.”
With Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci retiring, it appears that DeBrusk wants to pick up some of the slack they created. He is anxious to get a new contract. He had a pretty good 2022-23 season, collecting 27 goals and 23 assists in 64 games. He’s in the last year of his $4 million pact and wants to get to that 30-goal mark this upcoming season.
Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney is expected to have upwards of $28.5 million in salary cap space after the upcoming season. Unless Pavel Zacha and Charlie Coyle don’t meet expectations, he may need to search for a centerice contributor. If Sweeney does re-sign DeBrusk, it could be a new contract similar to the eight-year, $52 million ($6.5M AAV) contract the Tampa Bay Lightning signed Brandon Hagel to last week. “I’m hoping to stay [with the Boston Bruins]. It’s the only team that I know and the team that I grew up with.” Keep a close watch on our NHL rumors twice weekly series to know all the latest.

New York Rangers – Mark Scheifele
Rumor: Per – James Wilson – nhltraderumors.me. NHL rumors of another blockbuster trade this time between the Winnipeg Jets and New York Rangers, is in the spotlight.
The gist of this trade speculation lies in the exchange of star center Mark Scheifele and promising defenseman Ville Heinola from the Jets to the Rangers. In return, the Jets would receive center and winger Filip Chytil, along with defenseman Braden Schneider from the Rangers. Pretty intense stuff, right?

Scheifele, who is in the last year of a $6.125 million contract, could add to the Rangers arsenal. He collected 42 goals and 26 assists last season and was a dead-eye shooter with a 20.4 percent accuracy stat. He is in the last year of a $6.125 million contract. In this proposed trade scenario, Scheifele and Chytil are the two main ingredients. The Jets seem to be clearing out players and may be in a modified rebuild afterward. Adding Chytil, who is six years younger than Scheifele, could help with that rebuilding process.
Heinola is a prospect with some potential, and he’s only 21 years old. The salaries would differ a bit in this transaction. The Jets would gain about $1.62 million in cap space, bringing their total to a decent $3.4 million. The Rangers, on the other hand, only possess a negative -$46,583 of cap room (or lack thereof). They would add to their already negative cap space by that same figure of $1.62 million. That is not something that will likely nix a deal like this. Both teams would need to evaluate what they are getting and what their objectives are if the trade came to fruition.
That concludes this edition of NHL rumors. Be sure to catch our next article, and thanks for reading!
