And for a minute, it appeared he would stay with the Flames. But as the season went on, all signs pointed to Hanifin not re-signing with the Flames. Thus, they were forced to move him. Teams like the Tampa Bay Lightning and Vegas Golden Knights were interested in his services. The first destination on Hanifin’s list was Tampa Bay. However, the Lightning could not give up the assets the Flames wanted, so he was traded to the Golden Knights.
Instead, Hanifin takes a couple hundred thousand dollars less to play in Vegas in a state with no state income tax.
According to Puck Pedia, he will receive $29.4 million in signing bonus money.

Since arriving in Vegas, Hanifin has brought stability to the defensive side of the puck. He is a solid defenseman who has become Vegas’s number-one defenseman.
In 77 games with the Golden Knights and Flames, he has 44 points (13 goals and 31 assists). The Carolina Hurricanes drafted him fifth overall in 2015. He spent three seasons with the Hurricanes before being dealt to Calgary in June 2018 along with Elias Lindholm for Dougie Hamilton, Micheal Ferland, and Adam Fox to Carolina.
In 675 regular season games, he has 283 points (62 goals and 221 assists). Hanifin has only appeared in 27 playoff games, recording just eight assists.
The Golden Knights and GM Kelly McCrimmon always get their men. Despite what they think of Vegas and how they operate, they always pay to keep the guys they acquire. Just look at Ivan Barashev. Another trade deadline acquisition and is part of the future in Vegas.
Vegas always knows when it is time to find their next piece. With Hanifin extending, all eyes will be on Alec Martinez, a pending UFA, Jonathan Marchessault, and Chandler Stephenson.
