The Boston Bruins continue to threaten the record books with their 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday Night.
In Boston’s 47th game of the season, they picked up their 38th victory, sixth in a row, giving them 80 points on the season, surpassing both the 1979-80 Philadelphia Flyers and 1942-43 Canadiens as the fastest team to reach that plateau in NHL history. The Flyers ultimately won the Stanley Cup that season while the Canadiens lost in the second round.

Fastest To 80 Points – NHL History
- 2022-23 Boston Bruins (47 Games)
- 1979-80 Philadelphia Flyers (49 Games – Won Stanley Cup)
- 1943-44 Montreal Canadiens (49 Games – Lost in 2nd Round)
- 1983-84 Edmonton Oilers (50 Games – Won Stanley Cup)
- 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens (50 Games – Won Stanley Cup)
Currently, the Bruins are on pace for 140 points which would shatter the record of 132 points set by the 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens who were widely considered the greatest team in NHL history.

In many ways, this has been one of the most improbable runs in NHL history. Especially considering the relatively modest expectations for the team heading into 2022-23.
Not only are the Bruins on pace to break the points record, but they are also currently on pace for 66 wins which would surpass both the 1995-96 Detroit Red Wings and 2019-20 Tampa Bay Lightning who ended the year with 62 wins each. However, neither were Stanley Cup Champions by year’s end.
In addition, David Pastrnak, who was a factor in all four Bruins’ goals on Tuesday, is putting up some gaudy numbers that would nearly top many seasons in Bruins history. Pastrnak is currently on pace for 65 goals this season which would be the fourth most in franchise history.
Needless to say, it’s a good time to be a fan of the Boston Bruins.
