Welcome to another edition of Full Press Hockey’s NHL Rumors! The focus has shifted toward the new season. Teams are always looking to improve, and the excitement of a new NHL season is upon us.
In this Sunday edition of NHL Rumors, we’ll examine the Arizona Coyotes, Calgary Flames, and the Philadelphia Flyers.
NHL rumors in this edition include:
Are the Toronto Maple Leafs and Arizona Coyotes contemplating a big trade? Will the Flames trade Chris Tanev? Are NHL teams checking the availability of Morgan Frost?
Arizona Coyotes – Big trade possibility
Rumor: Per – Rob Ellis – nhltraderumor.com. Could a huge trade between the Coyotes and Maple Leafs be in the works?
According to Ellis, the two teams have discussed a blockbuster deal centering around Leafs’ goalie Ilya Samsonov. The prospective trade would be Matt Dumba, goalie Connor Ingram, and a 2024 3rd-round pick to Toronto. In return, the Coyotes would receive T.J. Brodie, (who would need to waive his no-trade clause), goaltender Ilya Samsonov, prospect Nick Moldenhauer, and a coveted 1st round pick in 2024.
Quite a huge transaction. Of course, the Maple Leafs are always attempting to get out of cap space jail, and this season is no different. They have only $194,166 of cap room, which includes $11.413 million in long-term injury reserve. Transacting a trade as suggested would save the Leafs an estimated $2.71 million in cap room. It would give them the breathing space they need to make further moves, such as bringing back defenseman Conor Timmins from LTIR. He carries a $1.1 million cap hit.
The Coyotes have about $4.63 million in cap space and could afford the additional $2.71 million they would need to expend to allow the deal to go down. With the Leafs seeing the great potential of goalie Joseph Woll and the steady backup duties of Ingram, the Toronto club could be set in net. The main incentive for the Coyotes would be to add yet another draft pick, with the first-round pick increasing their already deep treasure chest of draft picks. It goes without saying that Dumba would be shopped near the trade deadline, and it would give the Yotes a formidable goalie duo in Karel Vejmelka and Samsonov fulfilling the net duties.
This could be an ideal trade for both teams if it comes to fruition.
Calgary Flames – Chris Tanev
Rumor: Per – Michael DeRosa – nhltraderumors.me. The Flames have faltered out of the gate this season with a disappointing 2-5-1 record. Time to make some changes?
Tanev’s $4.5 million deal expires next summer. The Flames could look to move the veteran especially if they can’t turn things around. Tanev would be a good trade candidate near the deadline if the Flames become sellers. Of course, his 10-team no-trade list could be an obstacle to formulating a deal elsewhere. Could Tanev be headed back to the Vancouver Canucks where he completed 10 years of service in the past? Possibly. The Flames may need to sweeten the pot by retaining some of his salary. The 33-year-old native of Toronto has never been an offensive player with only 31 goals and 140 assists in 725 NHL games. He is an excellent shot blocker, turning away 1,465 shots.
It may depend on how well the Flames do before it is decided whether to attempt to move Tanev. Always a tough competitor, he has averaged over 20 minutes of ice time in his fourth season in Calgary. The Flames could certainly use the cap space, since they only have $471,667 currently. If a team is seeking a defensive contributor who also has playoff experience, Tanev may fill that role for them.

Philadelphia Flyers – Morgan Frost
Rumor: Per – Dave Litman – nhltraderumors.me. With Frost being benched for five games so far this season, the writing is on the wall for his future with the Flyers.
“Tortorella’s praise of Frost – even when he was playing his best – came off as grudging … he didn’t seem like he was ever fully sold on Frost.”@charlieo_conn shares why Morgan Frost has been left a healthy scratch in Philadelphia with @JeffMarek. #LetsGoFlyers pic.twitter.com/yes9FgGAx3

Sportsnet.ca hockey insider Elliotte Friedman stated that several teams have shown interest in acquiring Morgan Frost and have made inquiries about his availability. Among these teams, the Vancouver Canucks are noteworthy. He also said, “If the benchings continue, there’s no doubt, as Friedman says, “he’s going to want a change of scenery.”
It seems that if a player gets in the doghouse with head coach John Tortorella, there’s no getting out. While Frost led the Flyers with 40 points over the last 55 games last season, he isn’t being rewarded with much ice time. For whatever reason, it may be best for the Flyers to see what they can get for the former first-round pick of 2017. They may regret the decision, but Torts is a strict disciplinarian and he wastes no time getting rid of you if that is his intention.
