In what has been rumored for a LONG time, Arizona Coyotes defenseman Jakob Chychrun was finally dealt to the Ottawa Senators. The return back to the Coyotes was a Top 5 protected 2023 first-round pick, a conditional 2024 second-round pick, and a 2026 second-round pick.
Jakob Chychrun Has Been Traded
Trade alert! The #Sens have acquired defenceman Jakob Chychrun from @ArizonaCoyotes in exchange for a conditional first-round draft pick in ’23, a conditional second-round selection in ’24 (previously acquired from @Capitals) and a second-round pick in ’26. 1/2 pic.twitter.com/toPp9uDS3n

The talented and oft-injured defenseman was a surprise to be included near the top of most trade lists as mid-season approached. There were at least 10 interested teams who wanted to add him to their lineup. In the end, it was the Senators who won the Chychrun sweepstakes.
His very reasonable contract for $4.6 million until the conclusion of 2024-25 had much to do with why he was a well-sought-after commodity. While the 2021-22 season was not his best, his potential on a winning team was hard to overlook.

The Senators Got Themselves a Good Blueliner
Chychrun works best with a good puck-moving partner on the blue line. He really flourished with Alex Goligoski as shown by the excellent numbers he displayed. During the 2020-21 season, Chychrun scored more goals (18) than any other defenseman in the NHL. He had 41 points in 56 games.
There’s no reason to not think he will do well with his new team. He can rush the opposing team’s blueline with force and skill. His shot is one of the best in the NHL. It’s now time for Chychrun to really shine in his new role.
As for the Coyotes, while they didn’t NEED to trade Chychrun, but couldn’t resist the opportunity to build their team going forward. Make no mistake, he will be missed in Arizona.
